GMHF Scholars Program - Donate Today!
We need your assistance!
AAGP members fully fund the Scholars Program: the amount of money we receive from our membership directly influences the number of Scholars we are able to invite.
As shown in the graph to the left, in 2014 we raised $80,000 to support 33 psychiatry residents and 9 medical students. In 2016 we raised $67,500 and invited 27 residents and 10 medical students.
To maximize our ability to encourage the next generation of medical students and residents to consider careers in geriatric psychiatry, we have a fundraising goal of $100,000 this year, which would nearly double the number of trainees who could participate in the Scholars program.
Please donate to the 2017 Scholars Fund by November 30, 2016!
As we all know, Geriatric Psychiatrists are struggling to keep pace with the growing number of elderly patients requiring our expert care. In July 2012, the Institute of Medicine report projected the number of adults age 65 and older in the USA will grow to more than 72 million by 2030. In their support of the IOM study, the American Psychiatric Association cited estimates that the ratio of geriatric psychiatrist per older Americans will fall from “one for every 23,000 older Americans” to “one geriatric psychiatrist for every 27,000 individuals 65 and older by 2030”.
In 2008, the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation’s Scholars Fund was created to expose psychiatry residents and medical students to our field with the goal of inspiring interest in the pursuit of a Geriatric Psychiatry fellowship.
What Are The Components Of The Scholars Program?
The Scholars Program provides trainees with a full day of interactive programming at the annual AAGP meeting, including:
- career panels
- inspirational speakers
- small groups
- geriatric psychiatry symposia highlighting the work of prior Honors Scholars
- mentorship pairing, including the opportunity to work on a year-long scholarly project
- access to experts in the field of Geriatric Psychiatry
- attendance at a scholar’s breakfast, mentor paired luncheon and donor reception
“I wanted to thank you for including me in the events of the scholars program at the AAGP meeting this weekend. I cannot overstate what a positive experience this was for me, particularly being able to meet other medical students and potential mentors who share my interest in Geri-psych. Thank you again for putting together this wonderful program and allowing me to participate.” MS-III General Scholar
“Thank you so much for giving me the excellent opportunity to participate in the AAGP Scholars Program. I’m very grateful for everyone’s hard work, to donors for their generous contributions, AAGP members for their interest in my and other trainee’s professional and personal development, and to everyone for being so sweet and approachable. I've had such a positive experience that I’ll strongly encourage my home institution and professional organizations to donate funds to the Scholars Program, I'll promote the program to medical students and other residents at my institution, and will continue my AAGP membership with plans to attend the conference annually.” PGY3 Honors Scholar

Some Ways to Contribute:
A donation to the general fund provides a stipend for medical students to attend and participate in the Scholars program. The quantity of donations we receive directly impacts the number of medical students we invite to participate in the program. This past year, we provided medical students with a full day of programming, AAGP membership, AAGP meeting attendance, plus participation in our Scholars breakfast, mentorship lunch, Scholars alumni session and donor reception. Additionally, they received an additional travel stipend to defray the cost of airfare and hotel accommodations.
We also use monies from the general fund to provide 3-4 returning Honors Scholars a small travel stipend to present their scholarly work at the subsequent annual meeting.
Many individuals have generously donated to fully fund a psychiatry resident to travel to and participate in the Honors Scholars program. Recently, many groups at various academic institutions and/or hospital organizations have pooled monies together to provide a full scholarship. Each named Honors Scholar receives:
- A one-year membership to the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry
- Fully paid airfare and hotel accommodations to attend the AAGP annual meeting
- A full day of programming specifically for trainees, plus lunch with an assigned mentor, attendance at the Honors Scholars Alumni Session and a donor reception.
- Full registration to the AAGP Annual Meeting
- Ongoing mentorship throughout the year, culminating in the completion of a Scholarly project
- The opportunity to present at the next annual meeting (3-4 Honors Scholars are selected to return to present their scholarly work)
Donors will receive a CV and picture of their scholarship recipient and have the opportunity to meet them in person at the GMHF Donor Reception at the annual meeting. All donations to the GMHF Scholars Fund are tax-deductible.
