AAGP Webinars to Explain New CPT Psychiatry Codes
Most of the codes in the psychiatry section of the CPT® (i.e., 908XX codes) will change effective January 1, 2013. The CPT, or Current Procedural Terminology, is medical nomenclature used to report medical procedures and services under public and private health insurance programs. The new codes were released in late August and will be published by the American Medical Association (AMA) in early September.
In brief, most the 908XX psychotherapy codes are being abolished and replaced with new psychotherapy codes that will include time with both the patient and/or family members, a change long advocated by AAGP. There is no longer any distinction of the setting where psychotherapy is performed. Physicians using the evaluation and management (E&M) coding system will also be able to use a separate group of psychotherapy codes that will be add-on codes, when done in the same encounter along with an E&M service. The new codes will be time specific rather than a range of times as in the past. There will be an additional add-on code for interactive psychotherapy, which may be used when the patient encounter is made more complex by the need to involve people other than the patient. There is a new code for psychotherapy for a patient in a crisis.
The initial evaluation is now replaced with two codes to make a distinction between an initial evaluation with medical services done by a physician and one done by a non-physician. Code 90862, pharmacologic management with no more than minimal medical psychotherapy, has been eliminated. Psychiatrists will now use the appropriate E&M code when providing a service that centers on pharmacologic and other medical management of a patient.
To provide more information on the new psychiatric codes and how to use them, AAGP will offer a one-hour webinar in November and December. The webinar will be available for free as a special benefit to AAGP members with a 2013 expiration date. To renew online for 2013, please visit www.AAGPonline.org/renew.
