CMS Announcement of MDS 3.0 Plans

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) plans to announce the newly revised Minimum Data Set for skilled nursing and long term care facilities (MDS 3.0) implementation plans and timelines on the Open Door Forum on October 25, 2007 at 2 p.m. EDT. The dial-in information for the SNF/LTC ODF on October 25th at 2:00 p.m. is 800-837-1935; Conference ID: 17467025.

The development and validation of the MDS 3.0 will result in the first major revision of the MDS since 1995. Some goals of the MDS 3.0 are to improve accuracy, use more standardized tools and scales, and meet patient-centered focus goals of the agency. The MDS 3.0 may also support the Money Follows the Person Demonstration program by collecting data identifying nursing home residents suitable for potential community placement. This announcement will be followed by a Second MDS 3.0 Town Hall Meeting in January 2008.

AAGP has been consulted on development of the section on behavioral and mood patterns for the MDS 3.0.
