THANK YOU TO ALL OUR 2021 SCHOLARS DONORS

PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING FOR 2022

We are counting down to our first in person Scholars Program since 2019!  In 2020, we achieved a record $106,704 in donations for the Scholars Program.  In 2021, the Scholars Program organized and hosted an enormously successful virtual experience for the trainees. Since then, the Scholars Programming Committee has been brainstorming how to introduce geriatric psychiatry to more residents and medical students as early as possible.  With your generous support, we know the 2022 Scholars Program can be the largest and best ever!  We and our future Scholars deeply appreciate your continued support for this essential program, the preeminent pipeline for trainees into geriatric psychiatry in North America, by December 31, 2021.

Background

Geriatric Psychiatrists are struggling to keep pace with the growing number of elderly patients requiring our expert care. In July 2012, the Institute of Medicine report projected the number of adults age 65 and older in the USA will grow to more than 72 million by 2030. In their support of the IOM study, the American Psychiatric Association cited estimates that the ratio of geriatric psychiatrist per older Americans will fall from “one for every 23,000 older Americans” to “one geriatric psychiatrist for every 27,000 individuals 65 and older by 2030”. In 2008, the Scholars Program was created to introduce psychiatry residents and medical students to our field with the goal of inspiring interest in the pursuit of a Geriatric Psychiatry fellowship. What will my 2022 donations be used for?

Donations to the Scholars Program will support:

  • subsidizing accepted Scholars’ participation in the 2022 AAGP Scholars Program, including free registration to all other annual meeting activities
  • 1-year AAGP membership, including subscription to AJGP
  • free Scholar registration to the 2023 AAGP annual meeting

How Can You Contribute?

Scholars General Fund for Medical Students
A donation to the general fund provides a stipend for medical students to attend and participate in the Scholars program. The quantity of donations we receive directly impacts the number of medical students we invite to participate in the program.  This past year, we provided medical students with a full day of programming, AAGP membership, AAGP meeting attendance, plus participation in our Scholars breakfast, mentorship lunch, Scholars alumni session and donor reception.  Additionally, they received an additional travel stipend to defray the cost of airfare and hotel accommodations.

We also use monies to provide 3-4 returning Honors Scholars a small travel stipend to present their scholarly work at the subsequent annual meeting.

Honors Scholar for PGY1, 2 and 3 Psychiatry Residents

For a Named Scholarship on behalf of an individual or program, the minimum total donation is $2500.

Many individuals have generously donated to fully fund a psychiatry resident to travel to and participate in the Honors Scholars program.  Recently, many groups at various academic institutions and/or hospital organizations have pooled monies together to provide a full scholarship. Each named Honors Scholar receives:

  • A one-year membership to the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry
  • A full day of programming specifically for trainees, plus lunch with an assigned mentor, attendance at the Honors Scholars Alumni Session and a donor reception.
  • Full registration to the AAGP Annual Meeting
  • Ongoing mentorship throughout the year, culminating in the completion of a Scholarly project
  • The opportunity to present at the next annual meeting (3-4 Honors Scholars are selected to return to present their scholarly work)

Donors will receive a CV and picture of their scholarship recipient and have the opportunity to meet them in person at the AAGP Donor Reception at the annual meeting and mentioned in the meeting final program. All donations to the AAGP Scholars Fund are tax-deductible.

“I applied to the AAGP Scholars Program to explore the field of geriatric psychiatry and solidify my decision to pursue a career in geriatric mental health.  The mentorship and career development opportunities surpassed my expectations especially given the challenges and travel restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.  During fellowship interviews the Scholars Program was frequently a topic of discussion and emphasizing the prestigious and competitive nature of the Honors Scholarship.  I'm most appreciative for the networking opportunities and enthusiastically encourage others interested to apply!” - Anna Garcia, 2020 PGY-3 Scholar, University of New Mexico
