AAGP Call for Nominations: Officer Board Member Positions 2019
The AAGP Nominations Committee is seeking qualified candidates to run for officer board member positions in the 2019 election. All candidates must have a minimum of three years in the organization to be eligible to run. Officer positions are open to Psychiatrist Members and Retired Members. Terms of service begin after the conclusion of the 2019 AAGP Business Meeting.
Five positions on the AAGP Board of Directors will be open at the conclusion of AAGP’s 2019 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia:

Terms of Service: A total of 3 years: successive one-year terms as President-Elect, President, and Immediate Past President
Terms of Service: A total of 2 years: successive one-year terms as Secretary/Treasurer-Elect and Secretary/Treasurer

AAGP Officer Responsibilities and Criteria
A history of leadership within the AAGP either as a committee chair or a board member is a requirement in order to be considered by the nominations committee for an officer position.
The President, President-Elect, Secretary/Treasurer, Secretary/Treasurer-Elect, and the immediate Past President constitute the executive committee of the AAGP. The CEO participates in executive committee meetings as an ex-officio member. The executive committee is intimately involved in running all aspects of the organization including its financial affairs, educational programs and interface with governmental agencies and related organizations. The executive committee reports to the board of directors, and its officers are responsible for assisting the board in decision-making, prioritizing agendas and performing activities essential for the organization in lieu of the full board between board meetings. Officers participate on all board calls and meetings, have monthly teleconferences in addition to full board meetings, and may be required to perform other duties in conjunction with the staff to ensure that the wishes of the board of directors are carried out effectively. Officer participation is entirely voluntary. Officers receive support to cover necessary and reasonable travel expenses.
Members of the executive committee have somewhat distinct roles. The President is the executive officer of the organization and is in charge of the affairs and finances of the organization. The President also presides at all meetings of the members and the board of directors. The President-Elect fulfills these responsibilities in the absence of the President. The Secretary/Treasurer (and in his/her absence, the Secretary/Treasurer-Elect) is the primary financial officer of the organization and is responsible for the maintenance of adequate books and ongoing financial oversight of the organization.
Criteria for Officer Nomination
- Demonstrated leadership skills,
- knowledge of organizational functioning and the particular structure, function, and agenda of AAGP,
- an ability to work with others,
- leadership qualities, and
- the ability to articulate and implement a vision for AAGP as it moves into the future. This vision must address the organization’s strengths, areas needing improvement, and demonstrate an understanding of the needs of its members.
Additionally, it is desirable for the board to be professionally, ethnically, and gender diverse, representing the major constituents of AAGP members including researchers, clinicians, educators, and administrators. Board members who have previously served are eligible for a second term three years after the end of their first term. Members of the nominations committee are not eligible for nomination throughout their term on the committee.
